Latest News from Puerto Plata

According to Herve Humler, president and CEO of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, Marriott International is building three massive resorts in and around Cabarete, Puerto Plata. These include a W-Hotel/Resort, a Luxury Collection Resort, and a Ritz Carlton Reserve (one of only 4 in the world). The three combined will cost approximately $350 Million Dollars. According to Herve Humler, the plan is to target upper-echelon luxury travelers — and “bring them back to the Dominican Republic.”

The Ocean Club is scheduled to open October 2021.

The Ritz Carlton Reserve began development in 2019, but stopped in 2020 due to the Corona Virus pandemic. It is a very sensitive project, as it sits next to protected ecological land. Environmentalists filed suit in Federal Court to stop the development and address issues within the project. There is no scheduled completion date at this time. However, the project is expected to resume soon. We will update this page as soon as additional news becomes available.

Carnival Cruise Line's newly developed cruise port, Amber Cove, located on the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, welcomed its first ship October 6, 2015. It briefly shut down operations during the Corona Virus pandemic. However, operations are set to resume June 2021. This nearly $90 million dollar port project brought a huge influx of tourists and cash to the region. It is also thought of as the start of a new boom era for Puerto Plata, and is already responsible for increases in local land prices.
